Pennsylvania Law Seeks Fracking Suspension

Rep. Phyllis Mundy, a Pennsylvania state lawmaker wants to stop hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the Marcellus shale. Mundy is the chief sponsor of House Bill 2609, which would enforce a one-year suspension on issuing new natural gas well permits in Pennsylvania.

It has been reported that 43 drilling companies have violated 1,435 laws since January 2008. 952 of those violations were said to have likely impacted the environment.

The Marcellus shale is a rock formation rich in natural gas that lies beneath parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Maryland.

Pennsylvania State Reps. Eddie Day Pashinski and Karen Boback have agreed to co-sponsors Mundy’s bill.
